Cognitive Transitions founder Lauchlan Mackinnon completed his Ph.D in economics, psychology, philosophy and sociology at the University of Queensland in Queensland, Australia. This research included a focused interest in the psychology of creativity, in which Lauchlan examined the major models of creativity and the creative process in the psychology literature, and developed a life-cycle model of the creative process. Lauchlan researched the creative work processes of economists, and found that his life-cycle model of the creative process was a useful and appropriate framework for describing and understanding the actual creative work processes of economists when developing economic theories. Lauchlan then used sociological theory to examine how economic are diffused amongst economists and what factors impede or accelerate the diffusion and acceptance of ideas.
After completing his Ph.D dissertation and commencing work as a consultant, Lauchlan moved to Melbourne and became interested in the current models for innovation, knowledge management, organisational learning, change management, and organisational culture. Lauchlan found that the models from sociology and political institutionalism he had been working with for his doctoral studies were readily useful in relation to working with organisational development, particularly in relation to the areas of change management and organisational culture.
Lauchlan's interests naturally evolved to focusing on Idea Management Systems as a method to bring a disciplined, methodical rigorous and manageable approach to innovation, and Cognitive Transitions was founded to achieve these aims.
